Automation Program Management, Product Owners, and Why You Need Them
Around nine month ago, our engineering productivity (EP) team was in its infancy. We had just rebranded from QA, and our top antecedence was mechanization.I & # x27; ve touch a bit on our overall goals previously. This post isn ’ t about that. Today, I want to talk about a role we ’ ve ne'er had before on our automation labor, and it ’ s one we have found to be indispensable—Meet the merchandise proprietor (which leads to Automation Program Management).
Setting Priorities
A product owner for a team working on automation frameworks, you ask? They can ’ t exactly build a framework?
I don ’ t remember a clip when we ’ ve had a dedicated production owner until we formed our teams within EP. This unremarkably meant we had scrum teams, and someone within the team acting as scrum master (ordinarily a development manager, who also acted as a PO—or, one ware manager spread across way too many scrum team).
While that approach may seem efficient, it can lead to bias. If you aren ’ t careful, you may tend to set priorities based on what the squad want to work on (especially if you are a unmediated manager of the citizenry in the scrum squad), which may not forever be what the needs of the business are. As a product owner, I am capable to step back, aspect at the work proceed on across the squad, set priorities, and employment with the squad to build a backlog that meets those want.
That aver, you may experience many automation projects to care. What do you do in that case?
Automation Program Management
SUSA automates exploratory testing with persona-driven behavior, catching bugs that scripted automation misses.
That ’ s where the automation plan manager comes in.
Since we haven ’ t dominate cloning (or really answered if it ’ s ethical), you may bump you need POs sitting on a few automation projects. It could help to experience somebody who can assist with coordinating the broad goals, and work with those automation product owners to build towards the vision—I ’ ll phone this person the automation plan manager.
While tech stacks may vary across products or teams, there are some underlying similarities that the automation program manager can help POs with, working really closely with leaders to ensure all line priorities are see. Automation teams tend to be very heads-down in their work. The product proprietor (and plan manager) can help in respective way here:
Identify the job needs of all end user (be a PO! Interview your engineers! Talk to your test engineers!) to build the better framework for your position.
Work with other leadership to know what is being built and when. Why ensure there is testing in spot for one feature when lineament squad are working on something else? (Especially when you are get started, scrum teams may not be entirely up to speed with writing tests yet. You will need some representative.)
Work with product architects and experts to see the vision, and help believe about the plan and goals for your mechanization undertaking. Know what may be in the pipeline to ensure the mechanisation fabric can indorse that.
Evolving Roles in Testing and Automation
Almost every book or blog you read talks about the evolution towards test engineers and package engineers in test, and agile books talk individually about the product owner, but mostly from the perspective of a team building feature for a client. I ’ ve plant the PO very, real necessary in automation so far, as good as the need for Automation Program Management as we grow our teams and spread our mission. This is something we learn as we go, and if you have had success, I ’ d passion to hear your floor!
